Norway Rat/Sewerage Rat
Rattus norvegicus
Length:18-25cm long
Weight: 300-400g

This Rat thrives well in area like Garbage dumps and sewers. They can be found in abundant in basements and lower portions of building located near coast or riverbanks. They are good climbers and swimmers. Their bodies are heavy and thick with tail shorter than its body, with eyes that are small, nose and muzzle are blunt so are their Droppings, blunt at both ends. They are shy and nervous of new objects (Neophobic).

How fast does the Female Rat reproduce?
Female have 6-12 young/litter, 3-7 liters/year, they reproduce at 4-12 weeks.

How Norway/Sewerage Rat gets their name?
They are commonly found here in Malaysia and most dominantly found moving along rivers and established well on the coast. Where did they get their name? Most probably comes from the fact that they are seen along the drains or sewers.

Where to look for them?
T heir primary habitat is outdoors, this Species forages 100-300ft within Home range. they burrow into the soil to nest. Usually when house-owners detect a burrow in their compound, this maybe a tell tale sign of this Rat species.

What do they like?
Most omnivorous consume animal and vegetation. They seem to have a high need for meat than House Rat and require water daily to survive. This Rat will eat anything that Human consumes.


Roof Rat/House Rat
Rattus rattus diardii
Length: 15-22 cm long
Weight: 200-300g

This Rat prefers to nest high up under the roof. They can be found in areas such as hawker food centers and markets. They are excellent climber and are not fond of water. Their bodies are slender with tail longer than its head and body, with eyes that are large and prominent, nose are pointed with large and nearly naked ears. Their Droppings, pointed at both ends. Like Sewerage Rats are shy and nervous of new objects (Neophobic).

How fast does the Female Rat reproduce?
Female have 5-8 young/litter, they reproduce at 4-12 weeks.

How Roof/House Rat gets their name?
They are commonly found here in Malaysia and most dominantly found up in the attic and established their nest there. Where did they get their name? Most probably comes from the fact that they are good climbers and frequently found in the attic.

Where to look for them?
Their primary habitat is up in the roof, little in burrows. This Species forages 10-100ft within Home range. Probably when house-owners noticed them is by their noise up in the attic.

What do they like?
They seem to have a high need for meat than House Rat and require water daily to survive. This Rat will eat anything that Human consumes.


House Mouse
Mus musculus
Length: 6-9 cm long
Weight: 15-20g

House Mouse is rarely found in Malaysian Home and they are less nervous over New objects as compared with the two main rat species like Sewerage and Roof rats, instead, the Polynesian rat (Rattus exulans) is more commonly found in villages and Poultry farms. House mouse are excellent climbers although preferring not to swim, they’re capable of jumping a vertical distance of 30cm, chew on electrical wires, and running along pipes and wires.

They are Nibblers. Their bodies are small and slender with tail longer than its head and body, with pointed snout, small eyes and large ears. Their Droppings are rod shaped like.

How House Mouse gets their name?
Rarely found inside Malaysian home. “Mus” in Latin word for Mouse, and in Sanskrit language is “to steal” while “musculus” would mean “little thief” (klepto -parasite)

What do they like?
They seem to prefer cereal grains also prefer sweet liquids to pure water for drinking. They nibble and feed many times in many places.
